Beyond weight loss injections …

What happens when you need to stop? Does that mean you’ll put all your excess weight back on? If you have enjoyed success with skinny jabs, good for you. You’ll know how much better it feels to be slim and healthy. Yes, healthy, because all the research points to impressive health improvements from using these drugs. Reversal of your type 2 diabetes, for example. Improvements in weight-related issues such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol. If you had suffered with weight-related joint or muscle pain or back pain, you should feel a lot better. As time goes on, more benefits will be studied. I’ve read that an interesting side-effect is the reduction of interest in drinking alcohol and even gambling! But now comes the reality check. Can you keep it up? Can you hold on to these precious health gains and maintain your slim body? There is evidence emerging that, unfortunately, the “food noise” and your appetite comes back with a vengeance once you stop injecting. Food becomes delicious again. And hunger returns. The slight feeling of nausea has gone and there’s nothing to stop you eating. And all you can think about is food. What can you do?   Now come on … are you forgetting something? You already have months and months of KNOWING what it feels like to have willpower, to feel in control of your appetite, and you have hundreds of memories of eating sparingly, of not eating between meals, of feeling like you can control yourself around food. Have you already forgotten what that feels like? Because it is an important resource for you to call on. Memory and experience live inside your subconscious mind and influence what you do and how you feel now. And that subconscious mind is where we hypnotherapists work, sorting out the confusion, the mixed messages, the imbalance and lack of clarity. And then reorganising all that mess into mental and emotional resources that will help you achieve your dreams.  So you already have a great beginning to the new, slim, rest of your life. Even if you’ll no longer be supported by the weight-loss drugs. Your long-term solution awaits. And hypnotherapy is the answer.

What you need now is some iron willpower!

Skinny jabs might be akin to injectable willpower. But actually, willpower is much more than that. It is your own inner resource to support you in whatever you want to do. And willpower - iron willpower - is one of the tracks in my 12 step weight-loss course. It’s a short track and is designed to build up your inner willpower “muscles” so that you have complete control over your eating. When I first began helping clients to lose weight, it was obvious that building willpower was one of the primary goals. Clients used to complain of having no willpower when it came to food. But that is just a mind illusion. Of course everyone has willpower … in some areas of their lives. It simply requires the mind to build up those willpower thoughts, ideas and beliefs and apply them to eating and getting slim. This premise is a fundamental pre-suppositiion of NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming). “You already have all the resources you need, or you can create them” Think of willpower as a mental muscle that you’ve allowed to become flabby and underused. If you work that muscle it will grow. It will bcome strong. It may even become iron willower! But I’m not writing about a mysterious, amorphous inner force. In fact, willpower can be pinned down as clear mental skills or attributes. This way, you can gain some clarity about what you are trying to build. The six skills of willpower (from my book Slimmer and Healthier): 1. Determination:  You are completely determined to lose all your excess weight, your mind is made up, you are fixed on your goal. 2. Motivation:  The energy of your incentive to be slim and healthy, to love yourself and your life. You can see yourself in your slim future and it inspires you. 3. Confidence:  You trust your abilities, you feel self-assured, you can do it!  4. Focus: You have total clarity about your goal. All your attention, your energy and your resources are concentrated on becoming slim and healthy. 5. Tenacity:  Stubborn and persistent, you stick to your goal, never giving up, no matter what difficulties come your way. 6. Mental toughness: You’ve made up your mind and that is it! Mentally resolute and intractable, strong and resilient, you hold firmly on to your goal, despite all the distractions and temptations. The mind repels unwanted thoughts or ideas that might interfere with success. Would you like to grow some willpower now? Weight loss injections are all the rage …

Does that mean there is no longer a demand for “no-jab” slimming methods like hypnotherapy? Well, yes and no. Ouch! I’m sitting on the fence and it’s not very comfortable. But let me explain. As an effective treatment for excess weight, there’s no doubt that the jabs have it. They work.  I did some research a while back for an article I wrote in the NCH Hypnotherapy Journal and the clinical trial results clearly show these injections are extremely effective. From my article about Ozempic/Wegovy: “The active ingredient, semaglutide, was first studied in clinical trials as far back as 2008. By 2012, researchers were testing the drug as once weekly injections for diabetic patients. In March 2021, a phase III trial took place (randomised, double-blind) on 1,961 adults with a BMI of 30 or more. The results were impressive. The average weight reduction after 68 weeks was 14.9% of body weight for those participants on the drug, compared with a 2.4% loss for those taking the placebo. Both groups received diet and lifestyle advice as part of the programme.” So trials from 2008; that provides a good number of years of data in order for any health-related side-effects to surface. And as more patients take the drugs, the more reliable the safety data becomes. There are known serious problems, including a very rare risk of pancreatitis. The more common side-effects are widely reported, and are nausea, sickness, constipation and diahorrea, as well as fatigue. These side-effects can be managed by ensuring patients eat a well-balanced and nutritionally complete diet, are taking the correct (lowest) dose and only progress to a higher dose when required to continue losing weight. There are costs, too. As I write, the cost of the next generation drug, Mounjaro (tirzepatide), has risen because the US (quite rightly) has instructed Eli Lilly, the manufacturers, not to discount the drug to foreign markets. There should be a level playing field, cost-wise, for all those patients who wish to take the drug for weight loss. Let me be clear: if the skinny-jabs work for you and you can afford it and you can obtain the drug because you fulfil the medical criteria, then go for it. Tough out the side- effects, give it your best shot, don’t cheat by missing doses then gorging yourself and keep going until you have reached your ideal weight. Oh, and eat well and keep exercising! It’s been reported that patients can lose considerable amounts of muscle as well as fat. That gym membership you have never used should be dusted off and put to good use. What happens if you can’t take these drugs or you can’t afford it? Or you have a needle phobia? Or you don’t meet the medical criteria? Or the side effects are too off-putting? Well, there’s always HYPNOTHERAPY! And hypnotherapy is fabulous at having the exact same effect on your mind and body as these skinny jabs. And, what is more important, there are no horrible side-effects. None at all! And the benefits of hypnotherapy are not limited to weight loss. You will enjoy increased confidence, better relaxation (less stress and anxiety) better sleep, more control over your thoughts and feelings and a clearer sense of who you are and how you want to live your life. Yes, hypnotherapy can do this! Within my 12-track weight loss programme are the mind-instructions to achieve all of the above and more … Back to the weight loss. When you use hypnotherapy to lose weight, one of the first things you’ll notice is the “food noise” disappears. I mention this new buzz word because articles (those pesky celebs again who want to tell you all about it) state that this is what jab-users notice. No “food noise”. Well, I was there talking about this before it was even called food noise. And within my programme is the powerful suggestion for you to “forget about food, you simply forget about food”. Food amnesia. Hypnosis is very good at inducing amnesia. It’s one of the hypnotic phenomena, and happens readily in a hypnotic trance. I knew I had to address food amnesia as a priority because, in my many decades of dieting, there was one thing I knew for sure. The moment you go on a diet, you simply cannot stop thinking about food. “What can I eat now? What can I eat next? How many calories have I had so far? Is that sandwich low fat? If I have one square of chocolate, can I resist the whole bar? Does an apple cancel out a bag of crisps?” And so on and so on. Being able to forget about food (except at meal times) is the single most useful aid to losing weight with hypnotherapy. As I state in the hypnotherapy tracks, “the time in between meals becomes your favourite time when you can enjoy your life, do the things you love” … and various other positive suggestions. So … if you think the only way to deal with “food noise” is to spend the money and get the skinny jabs, then you might want to think again! That’s all for now, but more on this subject coming soon.
